Scaling & Root Planing

When you let plaque and bacteria linger, you’re putting yourself at risk for a multitude of issues. As gum disease progresses, scaling and root planing is a common treatment to get your mouth back on the path to health.

What is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing is the process of deep cleaning below the gumline to eliminate gum disease-causing bacteria. Scaling is the first part of the treatment and involves our dentist removing plaque and tartar. From there, planing will smooth out the tooth roots so that your gums can properly reattach to your teeth. We’ll use a local anesthetic to minimize pain, and may even have you come in for more treatments to ensure its effectiveness.

Why Do I Need Scaling and Root Planing?

Gum disease affects millions of Americans every single year. As the disease progress, plaque and bacteria cause pockets to form in the gum. If left untreated, it will continue to spread, creating a need for dental intervention. However, if you choose to continue without treatment, oral structures, including the gum and jawbone, can begin to deteriorate.
