Caring for Your Dentures

February 22, 2022

People wear dentures from Marco Island for various reasons—some for comfort, others for aesthetics, and others simply for function. Regardless of your reason, you probably know that your dentures serve a purpose and help you function in your day-to-day life. But did you know that they require care and attention, just like your natural teeth? If you want to keep your dentures healthy and functioning properly, it's up to you to care for them.

It can be difficult to adjust to life without your original teeth. But dentures can be an effective solution for providing your mouth with the structure and function it needs to feel healthy and comfortable. To ensure that your dentures provide you with the best possible results, you should take good care of them. In this article, we'll go over the basics of denture care so that you can make sure that your dentures last as long as possible.

Tips for Proper Denture Care

Cleaning

To clean your dentures, gently soak them in a solution of water and baking soda after each meal. Baking soda is a gentle abrasive that helps to keep your dentures clean without damaging them. In general, you should clean your dentures two or three times a day. Dentists also suggest using a special denture cleaner after every meal. Doing so can help to keep your artificial teeth in good condition.

Brushing

Like your natural teeth, your dentures also require daily brushing to remove tartar and plaque. Some also suggest flossing your dentures to help prevent bacteria and food debris build-up. However, please do not use regular toothpaste on your dentures, as this can make them more susceptible to staining and gum damage. Use a special denture toothpaste.

In fact, the manufacturer of denture toothpaste recommends that you use only the specially formulated paste for dentures because it is specifically made for a denture user's needs. You should also be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush, not a hard-bristled one.

Repairing Broken Dentures

If you notice cracks in your dentures, call your dentist immediately. It is best to repair the cracks as soon as you notice them because otherwise, they will most likely spread and cause your dentures to break. Your dentist can help you repair your dentures and make them look even better.

Remember not to do this on your own, as it may damage your dentures. It's better to leave this sort of work to a dental professional.
