What is “pericoronitis”? Pericoronitis is the inflammation of the tissue surrounding a third molar, known as wisdom tooth. Pericoronitis can develop when wisdom teeth partially break through the gums. This allows an opening for bacteria to enter around the tooth and wreak havoc. If it remains there, this may lead to gum irritation. Your dentist Marco Island Florida may recommend having the flap removed or extracting the wisdom tooth.
Symptoms of pericoronitis may vary depending on whether the condition is acute or chronic. Symptoms of acute pericoronitis include trismus (lockjaw), severe pain near your back teeth, the discharge of pus, pain when swallowing, and swelling of gum tissue. The symptoms of chronic pericoronitis can include a bad taste in your mouth, bad breath, and a mild or dull ache lasting for one or two days.
Your dentist will examine your teeth to see how they’re coming in and to see if it’s partially erupted and to check for a gum flap. Your dentist will take note of your symptoms such as swelling or infection and X-rays may be necessary.
If the pericoronitis is limited to the tooth, treat it by rinsing your mouth with warm salt water and make sure that the gum flap is free from food particles under it. If the infection has spread out to your tooth, jaw, and neck, see your dentist immediately. Your dentist can treat the infection with antibiotics and may also prescribe you pain medications.
