The Seven Types of Malocclusion

Overbite

You have an overbite if the upper jaw completely covers the lower jaw. People, including your dentist, may also refer to this condition as “buck teeth.” Childhood mannerisms like thumbsucking and pen-chewing could lead to an overbite.

Underbite

The underbite is the opposite of an overbite. It has all lower teeth extending forward and usually indicates jaw alignment problems.

Crossbite

Crossbite places the upper front or back teeth behind their lower counterparts when the mouth is closed. This is different from an underbite. All lower teeth jut out ahead of the upper teeth in an underbite instead of just the front or back groups.

Open Bite

An open bite is when there is no contact between the rear or front teeth when the mouth closes. There are two types of open bites: the anterior and the posterior. An anterior open bite lacks rear teeth contact, while the posterior variant affects the front teeth.

Overjet

Overjet is often confused with an overbite. However, there are significant differences between the two. An overbite covers the lower teeth, with the upper teeth pointing straight down. An overjet has the upper teeth pushing forward at an angle, leaving a gap between them and those below them. Severe cases have significant effects on appearance.

Crowded Teeth

As its name suggests, crowded teeth occur when permanent teeth erupt with insufficient space. Instead of growing straight up or down, they grow at angles and impact one another. This condition does not affect the molars – only the six front teeth in the lower and upper jaw.

Gapped Teeth

Also referred to as diastema, gapped teeth feature irregular spaces between one or more teeth. The most noticeable gap is between the two front teeth. However, the rear teeth may also have huge gaps. This condition can be addressed through dental bonding, braces, or dental crowns.
