Dental emergencies aren’t something we all look forward to but it happens. Dental emergencies vary but they usually involve some type of severe pain in your mouth or a broken tooth. If you think you have a dental emergency, contact your emergency dentist office immediately. It is more likely for you to keep the teeth involved the sooner you take action.

Are Dental Emergencies Preventable?

Accidents can happen but dental emergencies? You can prevent them from happening. The best ways to prevent dental emergencies is to maintain good oral hygiene and frequent visits to the dentist. Even a small cavity if left untreated, can become a painful, infected tooth over time.

Basic Things You Can Do to Prevent Dental Emergencies

Regardless of sports activities, there are things you can do for your dental health that can lower your risk for a dental emergency. They are:

  • Limit your consumption of foods that contains sugar
  • Brush with fluoride toothpaste twice daily and use a fluoride mouthwash
  • Floss at least once a day
  • See your dentist regularly
  • Since dental emergencies are more common to children, remind them of the rules of daily brushing and flossing habits and watch what you feed them
  • Wear a helmet, a mouthguard, face mask, or jaw guard if you play contact sports

You must also avoid chewing on hard candies, ice, pencils, or other hard objects and never use your teeth to open packages or bottles.

What Parents Need to Know About DentalEmergencies

Accidents can happen anytime, anywhere and young children are more susceptible to them than adults. Knowing how to handle a dental emergency can save your child’s permanent tooth. For all dental emergencies, it is best to take your child to the dentist or an emergency room as soon as possible.
