What to Do During Each Dental Emergency

Knocked-Out Tooth

You can do nothing to help a tooth that's knocked out, so you must not panic. Instead, take a minute to carefully assess the situation. The best thing to do for a knocked-out tooth is to cover the tooth with your hand or a soft towel to minimize exposure to air, then attempt to get the tooth into your mouth. Do not hold the tooth by the root. Only touch the crown.

Otherwise, don't try to force it back into place. Instead, call your dentist as soon as possible to make sure the tooth is taken care of. Keep your mouth moist with cold water or saline solution. If you wait, it could become infected and cause serious health problems.

Tooth Pain

Most people recognize a toothache as a dull, throbbing sensation. When you're the one who's experiencing this pain, try to use ice or baking soda to numb the area around the tooth. You can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever for temporary relief, but only if you are sure an infection does not cause the pain.

If you have an infection, you need to see a dentist as soon as possible to get it treated. If the pain remains and you don't see any improvement after a few days, it could signify a worse dental problem. Make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

Broken Tooth

Broken teeth are the most common dental emergency, and you can't do much to help it. However, you can still protect the tooth and prevent infection by following the same steps you would for a knocked-out tooth. Get to a dentist or emergency room immediately to avoid getting the tooth infected.

If you're lucky, the tooth will be repaired, and it will heal without any problems. However, if the tooth is broken into pieces, it will likely need to be removed. Your best option is to seek immediate medical attention.
