What Not to Do After a Tooth Extraction

July 27, 2021

Tooth extractions may be necessary for several reasons like decay, injury, or gum disease. Tooth extraction Marco Island is a relatively common procedure for adults, even though teeth are meant to be permanent. Tooth extraction may be a simple extraction or a surgical extraction. For a simple extraction, your dentist will use a device called an ‘elevator’ to rock the tooth back and forth until it becomes loose. The tooth is then removed using dental forceps. If the tooth is impacted, a surgical extraction may be necessary.

Things You Should Avoid After a Tooth Extraction

After tooth extraction, it’s important to follow your dentist or your oral surgeon’s instructions on how to care for your mouth to speed up healing. Though aftercare may be based on the type of extraction and location of your tooth, you can usually expect to heal in a matter of 7-10 days. You should also make sure to keep the blood clot in place in the tooth socket. Here are simple things you must do to speed up healing and recovery after tooth extraction.

  • Don’t smoke for at least 48 hours following the extraction
  • Avoid eating solid foods immediately after extraction
  • Don’t forget to take your medicines as prescribed by your dentist
  • Avoid taking aspirin as it will delay clot formation, thereby will prevent healing
  • Avoid using straws, hot drinks, sodas, and spicy foods after extraction

What to Do If It Bleeds?

Slight bleeding may occur for the first day or so. The amount of blood may look dramatic than it is due to the fact that a small amount of blood is mixed with a larger amount of saliva. If you do notice bleeding, apply pressure to the socket and don’t rinse it out. Bite firmly on a folded piece of cotton material for at least 15 minutes. If the bleeding persists after an hour or two, contact your dentist immediately.
