What to Do When You’re Plagued With a Dental Emergency

August 23, 2021

A dental emergency can stare you right in the face, and some people still won’t see a dentist. There are two reasons why people dismiss calling a Marco Island emergency dentist. One, they don’t know their condition requires urgent care, or two, they are aware, but they choose not to acknowledge it.

Unfortunately, if you don’t seek help, your condition is only going to get worse. Some of the consequences of failing to get emergency dental care include tooth loss and infection.

What to Do During a Dental Emergency

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth is a dental emergency. It doesn’t matter how your tooth got knocked out. As soon as it gets removed from its socket, you need to call your emergency dentist right away. If you have the tooth, don’t attempt to rinse or clean it and never touch the roots.

Handle the knocked-out tooth by the crown and place it in a milk container to keep it moist. The faster you get to your emergency dentist, the better to keep the tooth viable.

A Cracked or Broken Tooth

The moment you realize that your tooth is cracked or broken, rinse your mouth with warm water. Get an ice pack and apply it to the affected side of your face to minimize swelling. You’ll likely experience pain.

You can reduce the pain by taking over-the-counter pain medications. Depending on the extent of the damage, your dentist may suggest a filling, root canal treatment, or a dental crown.
